Death Records. Uncertified, genealogical copies of death records of persons who died more than 20 years ago, but not before 1916, may be requested either from the Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Vital Records or from the county clerk in the county where the death occurred (see RESOURCES in the right-hand column and click on List of County Clerks).

Copies of death records included in the Pre-1916 Illinois Statewide Death Index may be obtained from the Illinois Regional Archives Depository System if IRAD holds death records for that county or from the county clerk in the county where the death occurred. Consult the Local Governmental Records Holdings Database to see if IRAD has death records for the county and date of the death you are requesting.

In compliance with current legislation, the Illinois Department of Public Health and county clerks shall furnish for genealogical purposes certified or uncertified photocopies of death records not less than 20 years old at a specified fee (410 Illinois Compiled Statutes 535/25).

Death records were kept by the government starting in 1843, but they were incomplete, and more were kept starting in 1877. Statewide registration of deaths began in 1916 with complete records by 1919. Recent copies of death certificates can be obtained from the Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Vital Records.
